LCDR Steinhauer has been a member of the Naval Order’s New York Commandery since 1989.
He entered the V-12 Deck Program at Tufts University and the V-7 Midshipman’s School at Columbia University in 1943 and received his commission upon graduating from Tufts in 1945. Sent to Subic Naval Base, he served on the LCI (L)-749 and the SC 773 until his release from active duty in 1946. LCDR Steinhauer entered the Naval Reserve Submarine Program and qualified in submarines in 1952. He was transferred to Air Wing Staff 83 at NAS Floyd Bennet Field as Submarine Advisor and ASW Specialist.
In civilian life he earned a graduate degree in computer methods from City University and spent 30 years with the Bell System as a specialist in computer system analysis, retiring in 1985. Presently, he is Director of the Retiree Assistance Office and is a life member of the Naval War College, the Navy League and the Retired Officer’s Association. He and his wife Eleanor live in Farmingdale, Long Island.

Luncheon Speaker March 31, 2008

CAPT Roger Lee Crossland, USN (Ret.) spoke on reserve mobilization to active duty in late2001 and his service in the Northern Arabian Gulf, Afghanistan, and elsewhere in Central and Southwest Asia. He frequently compared his day-to-day life as part of Operation Enduring Freedom with his experiences thirty years earlier as a SEAL in the Republic of Vietnam, often with a touch ofhumor. He placed his experiences in their historical and geographical context and gave his audience the full benefit of his 35 years service in, and insights into, Special Operations. Capt. Crossland is the Author of "The Jade Rooster" an historical novel featuring the Asiatic Fleet of the early 1900's. Pictured: Vic Campbell, Capt. Crossland, Roy DeFranco, Don Schuld.

This article places John Paul Jones in different light. It illuminates him in the full context of his career and times. It focuses on his character and real achievements, rather than his personality. The author is an award winning writer who served for two years at sea with the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Amphibious forces and 30-plus years as a reservist. He has been writing full time for about twelve years and currently is working on his sixth book.

Hereis a REVIEW of JADE ROOSTER by CAPT Roger Crossland, who has joined our NOUS NY Commandery. The book Jade Rooster is set in the 1913 Asiatic Fleet and has several central scenes in Shanghai. Crossland is working on another book in the series which will also have key scenes in Shanghai. We are returning to this "wiki" model for a website. For now, use the address www.nousnyc.wetpaint.com to reach this site. You will always be able to use this address to find the site. Soon you will ALSO be able to find this site at www.nousny.org.

You NEED to become a member of this site if you are an NOUSNY member because when it is fully functional - you will receive notice by email weekly or monthly of new additions or changes to the site - AND you can participate in "on site" forums between members on various topics. ALL MEMBERS and supporters of NOUSNY should become "members" of this "wiki" (which is simply a website that is easily managed by a team and is ideal for organizations).

With your membership on the site you will need to create a USERNAME and and password known only to you. This will help with internal messages between members and with the forum tools if you use them. Please pick a username that might help identify you. You can add your full name and photo and other details at your own profile page. Put as much as you like t here. Only other members (members must be approved to join the site) will be able to see the profiles. Years of naval service and rank are typical bits of information you might share. To use the tools on the site (like the forum) you will need to LOG IN. But you can (and anyone can) look at the main pages of the site without being a member. You can share pages by sending links in email to your friends, for instance.

Advanced Users:

SOME members who wish to help add material or photos or information to the site will be designated as "writers" or "moderators" and they will have the ability to make changes on pages - add new pages and so on. This particular wiki tool "wetpaint" is quite user friendly and people with modest web skills will pick up the editing concepts quickly. IF on a scale of 1 to 10, email is a "1" then this is about a "2" or "3". New users have access to many tips and help screens to walk them through the concepts of the editing tool bar.

People who currently put out the monthly luncheon notice or who take photos or who record the events .. will have access to the site as moderators or writers. They will be able to cut and paste their existing documents into the pages here for the benefit of everyone. Some photos will be loaded here, but for large albums of photos - we will have a "sister" site for viewing and sharing photos (you can easily download the ones you want) at picasa. Videos will be housed off site at youtube.com but will be playable inside our own site here at the wiki.

We began using this wiki a couple of years ago so some of the data here is out of date. We had a temporary member who offered to host our site and we moved our website there and set up a wiki there to manage it. It was a very impressive site and we appreciate the work offered by our host. But alas, the wiki in use there was not as user friendly and our "team" fell apart. This "wetpaint" wiki website has many more tools for the membership and has built in training and communications services ..so for the sake of manageability - we are moving the site BACK to the wetpaint location. The www.nousny.org URL that today goes to the free host service from Wayne Spivak of www.sbanetweb.com, will soon repoint to this wetpaint wiki. We should all appreciate Wayne's efforts, but in the end, an organization like this needs a fluid shift of opportuinites with changing leaders able to learn the tools easily. IT should not be dependent on one individual or even a couple to run the website in a timely manner. Shared - team type approach to an easy to learn wiki is in my opinion the best option.

NAVAL ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES NEW YORK COMMANDERY Monday, 5 May 2008 1130 - Reception 1200 - Luncheon Racquet & Tennis Club 370 Park Avenue New York City Scott A. Rae Lieutenant Rae graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1988, enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1990 and was assigned to the Intracoastal Waterway near Charleston, SC. Qualifying as a small boat coxswain, he quickly advanced to Boatswain Second Class in Baltimore in charge of a 10 person duty section conducting search and rescue, law enforcement and environmental protection on the Upper Chesapeake Bay. In 1995 he was transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter POINT HIGHLAND homeported in Chincoteague, VA. Qualifying as an underway OD, he advanced to Boatswain First Class, became Executive Petty Officer and in 1997 was named the Enlisted Person of the Year for Coast Guard District Five. Accepted to Officer Candidate School, he graduated in 2000 and was transferred to Coast Guard Cutter BRITOL BAY in Detroit, MI, then to Coast Guard Cutter ADAK as the Executive Officer in Sandy Hook, NJ. Four months after reporting aboard, ADAK deployed to the Middle East, where they patrolled the Persian Gulf throughout 2003. After his overseas tour, he became Deputy Group Commander of Coast Guard Group Eastern Shore, Chincoteague, VA and then Command Duty Officer of Coast Headquarters Command Center in Washington DC. Since July 2007 LT Rae has commanded Coast Guard Cutter STURGEON BAY in New York. Lieutenant Rae’s awards include the Permanent Cutterman and Coxswain Insignia, CG Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corp Commendation Medal, CG Achievement Medal, CG Commandants Letter of Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal and several Unit and Team Awards. http://navalorder.org http://nousny.org

Naval Aviation Museum and Blue Angels Airshow Pensacola Naval Air Station

On Thursday, 10 November 2005, several members of the Ne w York Commandery were invited to a tour of the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, and treated to VIP seating for the Blue Angels Airshow. Travel for the one day excursion was provided by North American Airline.

Jim Hornfischer is president of Hornfischer Literary Management, and is one of the few agents in the country who is both a licensed attorney and a former New York trade book editor. He lives with his wife, Sharon, and three children in Austin, Texas. The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is Jim Hornfischer’s first book – and the first book in sixty years to tell the story of the Battle off Samar, where a squadron of small US ships heroically upset a much larger Japanese battleship task force on 25 October 1944, thereby sparing GEN MacArthur’s Philippines invasion force from disaster.

1933-1976

At the beginning of World War II, President Roosevelt appointed Samuel Eliot Morison as the nation’s official historian of naval operations during that war. His only restriction was to safeguard information that would endanger national security. He served on eleven different ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific. The result of his work is a unique “shooting history” of 16 extraordinary volumes; the only work of its kind created to date. He was a Pulitzer Prize winning author, a Trumbull Professor of American History Emeritus at Harvard, and a Retired Rear Admiral in the United States Naval Reserve. Admiral Morison died on 15 May 1976 in Boston. The credo borne on his gravestone, at his request reads, “Dream dreams, then write them – aye, but live them first.”

Samuel Eliot Morison Award Dinner Monday, 7 November 2005 Racquet & Tennis Club, New York City Michael G. Walling Bloodstained Sea: The U.S. Coast Guard in the Battle of the Atlantic, 1941 - 1944

Mike Walling served in the U.S. Coast Guard for six years as a commissioned officer and a senior petty officer. His assignments included buoy tending, search and rescue missions, drug law enforcement, and oceanographic operations to the Arctic . As part of the Boarding Party and Prize Crew teams on two cutters, he participated in the seizures of a Panamanian drug-runner and a Cuban fishing boat. Walling has also just published, in conjunction with Flat Hammock Press, a new edition of “Sinbad of the Coast Guard,” the adventurous, true story of the USCGC Campbell ’s mascot whose exploits during World War II became legend. Walling appeared on the History Channel’s series “Man, Moment, Machine” episode about Andrew Higgins, the designer and builder of the vital landing craft used in World War II. Walling has spent more than 40 years collecting stories from hundreds of World War II veterans. At present he is an associate editor for an educational material development company. Walling and his wife live in Hudson , Massachusetts , where he spends his spare time working on his next book about amphibious operations during World War II.

Annual Congress in San Diego The New York Commandery was represented by four companions at the Naval Order's Annual Congress, held in San Diego, California, from 14 - 16 October 2004. Here are some pictures from that weekend. Attending were Jonathan Jones (New York Commander), John Cupschalk (New York Treasurer), Bill Schmidt, and Tom Spencer.
