LCDR Steinhauer has been a member of the Naval Order’s New York Commandery since 1989.
He entered the V-12 Deck Program at Tufts University and the V-7 Midshipman’s School at Columbia University in 1943 and received his commission upon graduating from Tufts in 1945. Sent to Subic Naval Base, he served on the LCI (L)-749 and the SC 773 until his release from active duty in 1946. LCDR Steinhauer entered the Naval Reserve Submarine Program and qualified in submarines in 1952. He was transferred to Air Wing Staff 83 at NAS Floyd Bennet Field as Submarine Advisor and ASW Specialist.
In civilian life he earned a graduate degree in computer methods from City University and spent 30 years with the Bell System as a specialist in computer system analysis, retiring in 1985. Presently, he is Director of the Retiree Assistance Office and is a life member of the Naval War College, the Navy League and the Retired Officer’s Association. He and his wife Eleanor live in Farmingdale, Long Island.
