Luncheon Speaker March 31, 2008
Crossland Talk
CAPT Roger Lee Crossland, USN (Ret.) spoke on reserve mobilization to active duty in late2001 and his service in the Northern Arabian Gulf, Afghanistan, and elsewhere in Central and Southwest Asia. He frequently compared his day-to-day life as part of Operation Enduring Freedom with his experiences thirty years earlier as a SEAL in the Republic of Vietnam, often with a touch ofhumor. He placed his experiences in their historical and geographical context and gave his audience the full benefit of his 35 years service in, and insights into, Special Operations. Capt. Crossland is the Author of "The Jade Rooster" an historical novel featuring the Asiatic Fleet of the early 1900's. Pictured: Vic Campbell, Capt. Crossland, Roy DeFranco, Don Schuld.

This article places John Paul Jones in different light. It illuminates him in the full context of his career and times. It focuses on his character and real achievements, rather than his personality. The author is an award winning writer who served for two years at sea with the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Amphibious forces and 30-plus years as a reservist. He has been writing full time for about twelve years and currently is working on his sixth book.

Jade Rooster ***** If Patrick O'Brian Read More Noir..., September 18, 2007
By R.L. Crossland (Broadsides Press, 2006)
Reviewed by Chris Knopf (Connecticut Muse, Autumn 2007)

There are worse things than being compared to Patrick O'Brian. And that's good news for R.L.Crossland, because comparisons between his historical naval thriller/crime story and the tales of O'Brian's Captain Aubrey are inevitable.

Both share an almost hypnotic evocation of the past, with rich descriptive detail and an encyclopedic command of nautical terminology and the vernacular of the times.

Where they begin to part company are the times themselves - for Crossland, it's early 20th century Asia, in particular Japanese-occupied Korea. A time that most readers, even lovers of exotic sea yarns, will find unfamiliar. Crossland's style, like O'Brian's, effectively captures the mood of this extremely alien environment, signaling from the first pages of the book that this ain't Kansas, Toto. So get ready for something completely different.

The other crucial distinction is that Jade Rooster is at heart an intricate murder mystery, complete with a self-possessed amateur sleuth in the form of Petty Officer Third Class Hobson of the U.S. Navy, a full complement of picaresque characters of questionable morality and several very nasty villains.
